This is my third time to be in Korea for the FIFA World Cup, and it’s always an interesting event to witness. The way the entire country rallies to support the team and cheer together is something I’ve never experienced in my country.

I was in the US when the World Cup was held there, in 1994, and it was a non-event. I only remember a few highlights shown on the evening news, and none of my friends would gather to watch games or root for the US team.

It had all the interest of a golf or tennis tournament – only fans of the sport watched – and nobody else did. If you were walking around a neighborhood in the US and the team scored a goal, you wouldn’t know. Here, there’s no question the Korean team scored because you can hear the whole country cheer. Just sit outside somewhere during the next game and you can tell the score by the cheers and groans coming from all the windows.

The nearest thing I’ve witnessed to it in the US is when the local university team is playing an important football or basketball game. However, the excitement and all-encompassing local support barely extends beyond the part of the state that the university is in.

Some of the difference can be explained by the relative lack of popularity of soccer in the US, compared to football or basketball, but I think the core of the difference is national pride. Koreans really, really get behind their teams and players in international competition.

On game day, the amount of people wearing red T-shirts, ranging from elementary students to senior citizens, is amazing. Even during the Olympics, I don’t think you’d see so many “Team USA” shirts being worn in America.

The success of the 2002 World Cup helps, too. Just before the 2002 World Cup, I remember asking girl students if they were going to watch the first game, and most said they weren’t and they didn’t care about sports. Well, a couple wins later and they were covered head to toe in red and couldn’t stop screaming “dae han min kuk”.

That fever is still carrying over 8 years later. Even if the US won the World Cup this time, I doubt you would see many people dancing in the streets. Imagine the pandemonium in every major city in Korea if they won it all. All services would come to a complete stop. I truly hoped the Korean team would have made it to the next round, and beyond, because it sure makes things entertaining around here.
